【Introduction of the project】
Malaysia is promoting a plan to develop a world-class oil refinery and petrochemical plant in Pengerang District of Johor as one of its national projects. Dialog began construction on the Pengerang Deepwater Terminal (PDT), an oil storage facility, in 2007, as part of the above plan, and after the first and second phases, the third phase was completed in 2021. Our company has been involved in all construction projects in phases 1, 2 and 3.
This time, we will introduce the third phase of construction. Unlike the first and second phases, which were based on the client’s design, the third phase was awarded as an EPC contract that in-cluded soil investigation, basic planning, and detailed design. The work includes reclamation for land storage facilities and construction of an oil jetty.
The reclamation work included reclaiming approximately 140 ha of soft ground nearshore with approximately 8 million m3 of sand and improving the reclaimed ground using the Vertical Drain Method to mitigate future settlement.
On the other, the oil jetty was constructed with four (4) berths, including that for vessel of 330,000 DWT, approximately 1.6km offshore from the reclaimed land, and a Trestle was constructed to connect the Jetty to the land.
The project period of 22 months, including detailed design, is relatively tight and the work duration was optimized by adopting precast construction for the superstructure. Furthermore, because workers and materials (rebar, concrete, precast materials, temporary materials, etc.) had to be transported by sea, the planning of a work base (logistics) to support this was critical to the execution of the construction.
