【Introduction of the project】
This project has been funded by JICA under ODA Loan. The Employer of the project is Mozambican Government. The main scope of the project consists of reconstruction of Container Wharf, dredging and reclamation to redevelop the existing port facilities.
Nacala Port serves as the gateway to the Nacala Corridor, an international logistics route connecting northern Mozambique to neighboring countries. The enhanced transportation capacity of the port is expected to contribute to the further development of the countries within the Nacala Corridor region.
This project includes the redevelopment of Container Yard, Port Access Road, Port Main Gate and Port Utilities (Electricity, Drainage, and Water Sewer). In addition to these works, the new facilities have been developed to handle the anticipated increase in future container volumes. The project also includes New Wharf Construction (Depth: -14m), Bypass Road (1Km), Expansion of the Yard using reclaimed dredged soil (250,000㎥), and the Construction of a Treatment Facility for contaminated dredged soil.
A notable aspect of this project is the deepening of the port depth. A New Wharf was constructed, and the area in front was dredged to a greater depth to allow large vessels to berth. Measures were implemented to ensure that the deepening and dredging slopes did not compromise the stability of the existing rubble foundations of the gravity concrete blocks. To stabilize the existing wharf, independent retaining walls were installed in front of it using the redundant SPSP that that were no longer needed due to design changes at the northern end.
Additionally, when using dredged soil for reclamation, some of the contaminated dredged soil was treated within a contaminated soil containment facility, which utilized impervious steel walls - a Japanese technology.
