【Introduction of the project】
Singapore is the center for various businesses as a hub in the Asia region and, with high-quality infrastructure, is considered an important business center for particularly providing advanced technology for the manufacturing, maintenance and repair of ships and marine-related structures.
This project is a design-build contract to construct a support base for companies related to marine resource development, such as oil and gas, located in the Tuas region in western Singapore. The main facilities include a quay wall berth for special vessels, a backyard for the assembly and maintenance of oil rig-related equipment, an administrative building, and a power distribution facility.
Given the high design load (250kPa) in the backyard, the entire area is supported by prestressed concrete piles (PHC piles). Due to the rapid construction of a large number of piles (about 6,000 piles) within short period, the IDD platform was utilized to enhance construction efficiency. IDD (Integrated Digital Delivery) is the use of digital technology aimed at integrating construction processes and facilitating collaboration among stakeholders, positioned as construction DX (digital transformation) in Singapore. By linking the real-time construction status with the BIM model, sequences for pile installation, the layout of piling equipment, and the estimation of required pile lengths were optimized in a virtual space, leading to improvements in quality and productivity.
Despite the delays caused by the impact of COVID-19 – 7.5 months due to the late site possession from the client and 9.5 months due to worker shortages and infection control measures - the project was completed within the revised schedule agreed upon with the client, achieving zero major accidents. As a result, the client highly appreciated the project’s completion, and the project team received a safety award from the Singapore WSH (Workplace Safety and Health) Council.
