【Introduction of the project】
In the Manila metropolitan area of the Republic of the Philippines, problems of transportation, environment, and disaster prevention are becoming more serious due to its concentration, which has become a bottleneck for economic development. Infrastructure development in the metropolitan area and its suburbs has become one of the most important policies. The Praridel Bypass Road is expected to contribute to economic and social development in the Manila metropolitan area and northern regions through ① alleviating traffic congestion around the Philippine-Japan Friendship Road, which was constructed with postwar compensation and ② improved transportation capacity and efficiency.
Immediately before the completion of Phases 1 and 2 (single-track roads), President Duterte was appointed, and it was decided that aggressive infrastructural development would be promoted under the catchphrase “Build Build Build,” and Phase 3 (double-track road construction), which had been undecided, would be implemented ahead of schedule. This Phase 3 consists of a bridge with a length of 1.1 km (bridge name: Angat Bridge) and a newly constructed road with a length of approximate 1 km, and is a widening work of Phase 2 constructed by our JV.
For the construction of the Angat Bridge, we adopted cantilever erection method using form travelers. We led local staff and workers who had little experience in the construction of bridges by this method, and the construction work was carried out while carefully teaching quality control and safety management along with the construction procedure.
Under the impact of COVID-19 at the final stage of construction, Japanese staff who had temporarily evacuated abroad were forced to remotely manage the work. However, thanks to the steady provision of technical guidance and handing down which had been given to the local staff and the workers since the commencement stage, the construction was successfully completed in March 2021.
